Privately, Mr. Obama has described himself, at times, as essentially a Blue Dog Democrat, referring to the shrinking caucus of fiscally conservative members of the party.

In all fairness, that's about as far left as the Democrats go these days anyway. So within the context of our crazy national politics, Obama really is the far left extremist the Palinites like to call him.
