We went through about 10 years there where internet communications really did break the distorted top-down daily news narrative presented by commercial media and their partners in the top economic and political castes. Or at least it provided the rest of us a place to refute the official nonsense that made more of a difference than just yelling at the TV used to do.
But it was only a matter of time before the world caught up to that. Eventually "new media" just becomes media. And the attendant power structure moves back in to assert its privileges. And those of us who were briefly allowed to participate are relegated once again to merely consuming.
