Voters could either reject Lieberman in the open primary.. or even send him to the runoff against Lamont. In less democratic electoral systems than ours... such as those in the United States... you end up with
herky-jerky end-runs around the rules like this that end up fragmenting rather than building coalitions through the electoral process.
