Afterward, Markey said, "Republicans have put the CEOs from the companies responsible for the worst offshore oil spill in our history into a witness protection program, when they should be helping to produce these witnesses before the committee so they can answer questions about their spill."
The committee is conducting hearings to discuss the results of a recent Interior Department report which cited the companies for 15 "incidents of non-compliance" related to the Macondo oil disaster.
The report, which is particularly hard on BP, figures to have heavy implications for all of the companies cited in the coming months.
The panel’s report will be used to shape reforms to offshore drilling safety and regulation. It also will be used by lawyers for victims involved in the multibillion dollar court battle over the oil spill, and by government agencies that are considering civil and criminal charges against BP and other companies.
Which explains why these company principals would rather not have to speak on the record right now and why their friends in Congress like John Fleming and Jeff Landry are happy to protect them from being compelled to.
