Update: Technically the city is required to roll back the millage... but this language looks really wobbly to me.
State law also requires taxing bodies to "roll back" tax millages each year so that increased assessments do not result in a tax windfall for government that was not approved by voters. Having taken that step, however, taxing bodies are then free to restore the previous tax rate.
The council is not the only taxing body that has control over tax rates. The biggest single chunk of property tax money -- nearly one-third -- goes to the Orleans Parish School Board. Board members have not yet indicated whether they support a rollback.
