You could call the situation with the Orleans Parish School Board elections this year a failure of democracy. Cynthia Cade's forced withdrawal this week leaves us with only three of the seven seats there contested.
It's also a plain old market failure. With OPSB taking control of the local school district back over from the state next year, these will be some plum positions replete with responsibility, patronage, and, traditionally, opportunities for the ethically agnostic to make some decent money. You'd think this would have drawn more interest than it has. The fact that this will be such a sleepy event is mystifying.
