King cake creep

Yesterday at Rouses. A full month before Carnival season.

Premature King Cakeage

This isn't exactly new.  King Cakes have been creeping out onto shelves at irregular times for a few years now.  But it's getting to where the season is irrelevant.  I suppose if your vacation in New Orleans doesn't coincide with Carnival then this works for you.

But Rouses can't be selling all those cakes to tourists.  What the heck is going on?  King cake is a seasonal food. Heck, it's not even that good. The holiday is really the only reason we eat it.  Imagine if you just ate candied sweet potatoes and canned cranberry sauce every Wednesday.  Or if McDonald's made the McRib sandwich available before the beginning of Toyotathon. I don't want to live in a universe ruled by this kind of chaos, people, and neither should you.
